Space shooters in virtual reality have been hit and miss so far. Most games are somewhat fun, but nothing memorable. Spartaga is certainly on the right track to leave a lasting impression in a good way. The arcade space shooter feeling is back, especially thanks to a few fun twists. It’s an easy to learn game, but excelling will require a lot of practice, patience, and luck. For an indie game, it certainly surpassed our wildest expectations.

Spartaga Turns Arcade-style Space Shooting in VR Gameplay

It is evident the developers of Spartaga have played their fair share of arcade space shooters. Everything about the game reminds us of the games we used to play decades ago. It is an exhilarating feeling, although you aren’t playing a mere port of an arcade game either. The game has some interesting twists and design choices that make it even more intriguing. Right now, the game is available on HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. It works quite well on both platforms, to say the least.

The main selling point of Spartaga is how it never feels as a stationary game by any means. The spaceship-shooting arcade style of the game is quite engaging and will keep players moving in their seat more often than not. You only need one controller, which is an interesting design choice. Shooting enemies while avoiding taking damage is pretty simple, but you won’t master this game overnight. The laser on your ship is always on but you can also use special weapons along the way.

Dodging the enemies, on the other hand, is a different matter. With over 30 types, strategizing is your best course of action. Additionally, Spartaga has 32 stages waiting to be cleared, all of which are carefully created by the developers. The difficulty curve ramps up slightly every level and beating the final five will require a steady hand and quick reflexes. Upgrading your secondary weapons is an absolute must, which is done through credits earned by completing levels. You can also “grind” weapons if you’re stuck, although we had no issue progressing normally.

Last but not least, Spartaga provides five different game modes. There is plenty of value for the money, to say the least. It is one of those games you will pick up and play again for quite some time to come. It is incredibly addictive and the music in the game fits the environments extremely well. We highly recommend the game to owners of both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, as you will have dozens of hours of fun with it. Spartaga is one of those games every needs to play at least once.
